How many of us still keep a diary? Sometimes, I wonder if people still know what a diary is anyway. I’m not going to go technical about the definition of a diary by referring to Webster’s or Oxford’s, but as far as I understand the concept of a diary is that it is something that we write on about almost everything that you wouldn’t normally tell anyone else, which normally consist of private thoughts and ideas. It is a way for you to pour your heart out and the diary literally becomes an imaginary friend, who continues to listen to your problems without fail, as long as you are willing to write in it.

A diary, more frequently than not, associated as a girl-thing, and quite frankly, there are more girls that own a diary than guys. But to be honest, I think it’s a neat idea to have a diary, in fact I used to have a hard cover diary once, which I kept for about 5 to 6 years or so, and then I stopped for quite a while. A few years later, I restarted it, and I began writing my diary on a word processor instead and keep it in a computer folder. Time evolved and so must the means, but not necessarily the concept. I think it’s a pretty neat idea to be able to go to a specific point in your past, and recall what you were thinking or did at that particular time.

But the fact of the matter is a diary is meant to be a private belonging. The mere idea of a diary be exposed to the public used to be unthinkable – it was a mortal sin. But as modern technology begins to take over our lives, the concept of diary takes a new form. Some of the people nowadays resort to weblogs and various social media.

Blogs in particular can be used for various purposes and through various methods. Some blogs are used to share ideas, while some are used to share interests, such as my Planet Cybertron and New Planet Cybertron pages. There are even those who use blogs as their diary, sharing their feelings and personal matters with the whole world.

I used to be totally against that idea, and I normally thought that personal things should remain personal, and it is unethical for personal stuffs to be told in the public.

But the more I think about it, the more I began to understand, why people chose to write their diary online, either on weblogs or on various social media. People write diaries because they need someone to listen to them. When you think about it from another perspective, it’s kind of stupid trying to tell an object, such as a book that would not be able to respond or comment.

More often than not, those who commit suicide are those who have nowhere else to turn to, no one to listen to them, no one to give them any opinions. That’s why there are various NGOs such as Befrienders that provide a channel to anyone who needs someone to talk to.

Sometimes, although we would like to keep our feelings or thoughts private, in reality, what we really want is someone to talk to, someone to listen to our problems and someone to give us ideas to solve our internal conflicts. Yes, more often than not, a person is encouraged to confide to a trusted friend, but how many of us really do have such a friend? Some people are lucky enough to have that type of friend. Some people are lucky enough to find that type of person in the form of their spouse, their other halves, or even a sibling.

Not everyone have that luxury.

I know how it feels like to have all of it bottled up inside, and sometimes it feels like it’s eating you from within. Sometimes, when you keep too much in and the pain becomes unbearable, it eventually explodes and that’s why sometimes you and I, we enter a fit of rage and loses our cool.

I still don’t quite like the idea of revealing our feelings or personal issues online to the general public, but I’m saying that I totally understand the justification. Everyone has that moment in their lives where they just want to scream their lungs out until there’s nothing else. It won’t do anything to solve any problem, but you do feel some form of relaxation once you’ve done it.

Keeping a diary is good, and in fact, I do encourage people to keep one. Whether or not you want to share it out to the world is another issue.

So now if you excuse me, I’m going to go and write my diary next.

Nope… don’t worry, I ain’t gonna kick the bucket – not just yet. I still got loads of stuffs I wanna do in life, so much to achieve, and I bet a lot of us do. But the thing is, if the Mayans have it their way, then we might as well be running out of time.

You see, today’s date is 22nd May 2012. Think about it, if things really do go awry and the world really does meet its doom, then 7 months from now, this very date, we are all going to be a permanent part of cosmic history.

I know, I know, a lot of you might say that many times in history, the world was touted to end, but humans still woke up the next day, and found out that they still have to go to work, pay their rents or mortgage, and tons of credit card bills to pay. The world didn’t end in the year 2000, or any other alleged dates in history for that matter, so what makes 2012 any different? Now, despite popular beliefs, I’m not really a believer, nor am I a doubter, I’m just saying that it’s a probability.

What makes this year more believable than any other dates before, is that this time, there are numerous telltale signs. Oh, come on; don’t tell me you don’t see it. For one, the weather’s changing. My friends in China once told me that Chinese New Year in China, normally celebrated during the months of January or February, used to signify that the winter season ends and spring starts, but when I went to Guangzhou, China last year by the of March, the winter chill can still be felt, albeit it’s ending, and in some parts of the world during January and February, blizzards were running rampant.

In Malaysia now, as I am writing this piece, we have having one of the worst heat waves in history – my thermometer just recorded 33°Celcius, which is darn hot. Just over a few weeks ago, it was raining too frequently, followed by mind-boggling thunderstorms, which doesn’t normally happen during these times of the year.

So yeah, of all the dates mentioned before, this is the most believable of all, because all the signs are there.

Still, I would like to think of myself as not being a believer. I do not want this world to end just yet, or at least not for another year. When the 2012 phenomenon started to pick up back in 2010, I began to think, what if this time, they were right? What if the world really ends on 21st December 2012? Well, just to be on the safe side, I began drafting my personal Bucket List, just in case. Having said that, even now, as the world is about to theoretically ends, I’m still adding to that list, and would probably be adding to it until I breathe my last.

I’m proud to say that I’ve achieved quite a number of things listed in that list, such as go climb a mountain (although some may argue that this falls a bit short, but although I didn’t the peak of Mt. Kinabalu, I still made it to ¾, or if there is still time, I just might give it another go); travel to a foreign country; have (a) blog(s) widely read by people all over the world; have a respectable number of Transformers in my Transformers collection; and also career-wise.

Some of the things on the Bucket List are works in progress, and could be achieved right before the world is supposed to end, such as to bring my mom on a plane ride and travelling all across Malaysia.

Unfortunately, there are also some things in that list that I don’t foresee happening in the near future – at least not before 21st December 2012. I ain’t gonna delve too much in that though, you gotta make do with what you have, right?

I think it’s important that we all have that Bucket List ready, as early as possible. It’s not that we are looking forward to dying, but we need to realize that death can come at anytime and anywhere, and when that time comes, are we ready to go? A friend of mine, Sharma once told me, a person needs to follow his heart and realize his dreams or passion, or else your eyes will not shut properly when you die.

I still hold on to that, and I do believe in that.

That is why, I have this Bucket List early. If the world doesn’t end this coming December, then it’s good for me that I had a good head start and have more time to fulfill them. If the world does indeed end, however, at least I knew I tried my best.

The same goes if my Bucket Day does come.

Also, you do remember the song “If I Die Young” by The Band Perry, and also “We Are Young” by Fun? That’s why I love those songs so much. The first song tells about how one would be accept it if he or she dies young, as long as he or she managed to achieve their dreams; while the second song is all about living your youth to the fullest.

I do implore you though, consider drafting your bucket list now, and start to realize it one by one. It’s good to have a head start. And while you’re at it, probably you relax a bit by listening to both of these wonderful songs.

Restoran Hijrah Sari

The traditional Hainanese (or Hailam) Chicken is probably one of the country’s most famous dish. It is enjoyed by millions from all walks of life, and typically sold by Chinese hawkers or food centres. And since it is normally sold in Chinese shops, most of our Malay brethren do not get the opportunity to taste it.

Restoran Hijrah Sari provides the Malays with such opportunity. The restaurant, although is helmed by a Chinese, is a certified Halal restaurant, and has been for years, one of the locals’ favourite.

Environment:

It’s your normal food centres, nothing special here, but comfortable for dining.

Menu:

Hailam Chicken Rice

Well, as the signboard says, this restaurant mainly sells Hainanese Chicken Rice, served with a bowl of soup.

Fried Bean Sprouts

If you like, you might want to order a plate of Fried Bean Sprouts, while you’re at it.

Iced Teh-O

Iced Bandung Syrup

Service:

Service is quite good and orders are served very promptly.

Conclusion:

Well, it’s a simple establishment. You don’t come to this place to expect anything fanciful, just good ol’ chicken rice.

Final verdict: 7.5/10

Golden Mansion

The Golden Mansion Restaurant at Bukit China has been one of the oldest restaurants in operations. The restaurant is quite famous for its tantalizing beef-based dishes, as well as its steamboat dishes.

The restaurant have been a favourite amongst businessman as well as locals.

Environment:

The restaurant houses the ground floor of a 3-storey building. The area is spacious and is perfect various functions and events.

Menu:

As mentioned before, Golden Mansion is quite famous for its beef-based cuisines. It has various dishes that are perfect for gathering with friends and family.

Fried Mee Hoon

First up, you should really try their Fried Mee Hoon. The common mistake that most people do with this is that the Mee Hoon or vermicelli will end up very dry. But Golden Mansion cooks it perfectly, with enough moist and flavour.

Yin Yong Kuey Teow

Also a must try is the Yin Yong Fried Kuey Teow with Gravy, which is my personal favourite, as well as the Fried Misua.

Fried Misua

Seafood Steamboat

Now, as mentioned before, Golden Mansion is also famous for its steamboat. Their recipe for Seafood Steamboat is really good, in which they at various ingredients such as crab sticks, fish balls, fresh fish, shrimps and squids, mixed with vegetables.

Beef Steamboat

Beef Steamboat Served

For those beef fans, you should really try their Beef Steamboat, which is one of the best I’ve tried so far. The thinly-cut beef is normally boiled before consuming, but some may prefer it to be half-cooked (or probably less).

Service:

The restaurant caters for private wedding dinner, private parties, as well as economic lunch.

Conclusion:

This place is indeed a surprise for me. Some people may choose to pass this restaurant, mostly due to its oldness, but really, for those who haven’t try this place, you should really do so, and be surprised.

The Avengers North American Release Poster

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!!!

It is arguably one of the most iconic rallying cry in the entire comic dome. It is the single most powerful gathering of superheroes in the entire Marvel Universe. It was their answer to DC Comic’s Justice League.

This was one of the movies that I’ve wanted to see for years. Ever since the teaser appeared in the first Iron Man movie, I have always wondered what it would be like to have all of these marvelous heroes in one film – it was indeed an unbelievable prospect. Each of the movies that would eventually lead to this movie was very good, especially with the Iron Man franchise topping the rank. They have all generally received positive reviews from film critics. So this film had to be good right?

You bet ya…

This movie will probably go down as the best ever superhero movie ever. What’s so great about this movie is that it doesn’t really focus on one single character, but rather each character receives equal amounts of spotlights and screen time. They are all equal members.

The contracting characterization between Captain America and Iron Man is really entertaining to watch; not to mention the suaveness of Mark Ruffalo playing Bruce Banner (which I think makes a better Bruce Banner than Edward Norton and Eric Bana – no disrespect to them), which easily makes him the revelation of the movie. The delicately woven rivalry between the Hulk and Thor is so enjoyable to watch, proves to be a running gag throughout the movie. For non-comic fans, you would first need to understand that both Thor and Hulk are two of the most physically powerful characters in the entire Marvel Universe. Their battles throughout their publication history have been nothing short of Earth-shaking. Even Loki’s psychopathic portrayal was eye-catching.

Not to be left out are the non-superpowered heroes of the team – Black Widow, Hawkeye and the man behind the initiative – Nick Fury. They may not have superpowers, but their mere presence was quite intimidating, making them equally valuable to the team.

The Avengers is basically an origin story of how the team got together in the first place. Those who are familiar with the Avengers comics may notice that the story is completely new, while still maintaining some key essence of the original origin story. Loki is still the S.O.B. behind everything, and Nick Fury is still the man pulling the strings. Instead now they have Loki bring a horde of bad@$$ aliens called Chitauri to Earth. Like I’ve said so many times before, it’s understandable to change the storyline, but never, ever change the essence of the original comics.

In this sense, The Avengers managed it perfectly.

Also, the lineup also differs from the original comic Avengers. Dr. Henry Pym and his wife (Ant-Man and Wasp) are clearly missing, with Black Widow and Hawkeye taking over their places. Captain America, although was normally depicted as the leader of the team, was not part of the original lineup in the comics, although he was later given the “founding member” status at the expense of The Hulk.

This movie is truly a joy to watch, and to see so many superheroes in one movie is truly amazing and unbelievable. Forget about The Dark Knight or even X-Men: First Class, both of which are very, very good movies, The Avengers get my pick as the best of all.

Now that all the dusts have settled, the powers that be in DC is probably biting their lips and pondering to release a movie of their own based on their equivalence of The Avengers – the Justice League. Now that’s a thought.

Extremely recommended.

Jetty Terminal

Today, Planet Cybertron travels to the Island of Pangkor, in the state of Perak Darul Ridzuan, off the Lumut shores. Pangkor Island or Pulau Pangkor is normally accessible via the ferry services based in the shores of Lumut. Frequent questions normally asked is, what are the places of interest to visit on this Island? Well, these few series of upcoming entries shall provide you with just that.

Jiang Jun Lou

The Temple

The first of these places of interest to be featured is the Jiang Jun Lou (将军楼) Chinese temple. Translated directly, it means the Soldier’s Floor. This is one of the more famous Chinese temple on the island and it’s very famous for its miniature replica of the Great Wall of China.

Miniature Great Wall

The temple is situated on hilly areas, still surrounded by lots of trees and even a lake.

View from Atop the Hill

A walk along the shores of the nearby lake is quite relaxing as well.

To the Lake

Deities on the Lake

The temple is adorned with many works of arts, ranging from monuments, altars, paintings, carvings and many others.

The Chinese letter depicted is pronounced as “lu”, meaning “Green”

Chinese Proverb meaning” Taken from Society, Used for Society”

Miniature Pagoda

Painting at the Bus Stop

Gateway

The buildings are also intricately designed, mostly adorned with traditional Chinese elements such as dragons, gold etc.

Main Complex

Furnace for burning paper offerings

This is probably the only building that feels a bit out of place…

And of course, when we talk about temples, there has to be deities and gods altars for prayers and offerings.

Altar of the Tiger God

Various Deities and Gods

If you ever come to Pangkor Island, do take note of this place of worship, definitely a place that you have to visit.

Big Nyonya Restaurant

Welcome back to another edition of Food Journal. Today, we will pay visit to newly opened restaurant in Melaka Raya, helmed by a celebrity chef, actor and comedian, Mr. Kenny Chan, or popularly known for his alter ego – Bibik Kim Neo.

The restaurant, formerly known as Kenny’s Delight and formerly situated in Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho @ Jalan Panjang, have just recently shifted over to Melaka Raya on 1st May 2012, and will be officially launched on 12th May 2012.

As the name says it, the restaurant serves mainly Baba Nyonya @ Straits Chinese’s cuisines.

Environment:

Interior 1 (Downstairs)

The restaurant consists of a double-storey shop house and has a comfortable and casual environment for dining.

Interior 2 (Downstairs)

Interior 3 (Upstairs)

The restaurant is also decorated with several antique items, some of which are personally owned by Kenny Chan himself.

Antique Decors

Menu:

As mentioned before, Big Nyonya typically serves Baba Nyonya cuisine, most of which comes from Kenny Chan’s own recipe. And for Muslims, do not worry; this is a pork-free restaurant.

Sek Bak Chicken

So far, I’ve managed to try some of his dishes such as the ever so popular Sek Bak Chicken. Although traditional Sek Bak is made from pork, Big Nyonya has substitute it with chicken instead. The Kangkung Belacan is worth trying, along with the Cencalok Omelet.

Cencalok Omelet

Kangkung Belacan

Other dishes that is worth trying are the Buah Keluak Chicken, Chicken Curry, the ever so popular Pong The and many more. Some of these dishes will only be available for orders after the opening.

Glorious Cendol

After you are done dining, you probably want to try Big Nyonya’s very own Cendol, which in my opinion, is one of the tastiest serving of cendol you will ever taste.

Service:

Service is quite good and the waiters and waitresses are quite helpful and prompt with the orders. If you are lucky enough, you might even get Kenny himself to serve you.

Conclusion:

This is quite a promising establishment, which can only get better upon its official launching. If you want to try good Peranakan food, this is definitely a place to consider.

Final verdict: 8.5/10
